Convergence Hobby Update - Speed Painting CoC

One of the theories I had about owning a Convergence of Cyriss army is that it would be very easy to paint quickly.

I am not a particularly skilled painter, though I truly enjoy it when I have a fully painted list on the table. I paint to a standard that I can look at the model from 3 feet away and be happy with it. Not what the crazy painter friends I have are happy with, but what I'm happy with being on the table. This is important as a standard because painting is about time and I don't particularly have a lot of it.

A large part of my enjoyment comes from the idea that once I have a faction fully painted, I can just put it on the table and play and not have to think "damn I need to get to painting this."

So the theory about painting CoC is that you can prime the models with a metallic spray paint, add in a few colors, apply a wash, and then be done.  Turns out this is actually true!

Since my last post about CoC spoke about how the bulk of the models I received were in really bad shape and I highlighted obnoxious the paint jobs were in addition to the fact that most everything was in pieces when it arrived, compare this to what the Monitor looked like before it was primed and painted:

That's quite a transformation! So how much effort was put into this from a painting perspective?

  • I based the model with sand/aquarium gravel.
  • I spray painted the model with some metallic spray paint, though I did test on the extra armless Axis model that was sent with my lot to make sure the primer wasn't going to be too thick.
  • I spent roughly 2 hours or so applying the colors and washes to the primed model.
  • I also had to repaint the base and basing material black instead of silver, which was odd but worth it for how much time the whole process saved me.
I didn't get any fancy primer either, just some Rust-olium at Home Depot:

I should put a few notes, since it was slightly jarring with this as a primer.

The model will look almost comically silver when primed. In fact it was left slightly sticky, despite drying for nearly 24 hours after being primed. In fact before I started I was afraid the entire project was going to be a failure and I'd have to just prime everything black like I always do.

Luckily the washes came through for me in the end.  It's amazing what that did when combined with some gold and bronze paint on the model.  Everything turned out about as I'd have expected it in the end, and I'm at a point where I think I can really hammer out my CoC army probably well ahead of my Trolls.

As a point of painting comparison, I spent about two hours painting that Monitor. I spent about an hour and a half just touching up the base painting on my first Longrider unit, and I still have to finish painting the metals on it before I can apply my wash and then go back and hit a highlight to get the skin on the trolls the way I want it.

Perhaps it's because I'm pushing the Trolls to be painted to a much higher standard than what I think the CoC should be, but man does it just feel nice to be able to knock out a model and have it come out looking good enough for me to be happy with. For my Trolls I feel like I need to put in all this extra work to get it to a point where I'm happy. I suppose that's the difference between having models of something organic like a beast or a infantry with lots of exposed flesh vs. robots. Here's an example of what I paint my Trolls to:

Right now I have to admit it's almost tempting to just try and get the CoC going. I did get lucky and have my wife agree to let me play in our local Scrum League (think a Steamroller with 1 game a week), and lists are due Friday. I was very likely playing Trolls in it, though after last night I admit that I've had some thoughts about playing CoC instead. I have two days to decide!

A Trainer's Resolve

The sky began to darken as I made my way back into Viridian City after defeating Wolf on Route 22. There was still time to push on through Viridian Forest to Pewter City, but it looked like the weather was going to take a turn for the worse. I had my eyes on the sky as I made my way toward the Pokémon Center to get treatment for Kiwi, so I didn't notice that I'd picked up a new follower. He had been watching me since I came back into town, but I barely noticed him. It wasn't until I came out of the Pokémon Center and saw him leaning casually against a light post that I really noticed him. His hair was messy, and his arms were crossed against his chest. He was younger than me, but he didn't carry himself that way. When he saw that I finally noticed him, he pushed off the light post and walked up to me confidently.
"I saw you fight," he announced.
"Yeah? Are you a trainer?" I asked.
"Yeah. Are you?" he asked. His words had a bit of venom in them.
"What is that supposed to mean?" I asked.
"You aren't serious at all, man. I can tell. You wouldn't stand a chance against a real trainer like me." He was cocky, not unlike Wolf.
"Is that a challenge?" I asked.
He laughed at me. "Oh, no. I'm being sincere. You need to get serious before you can take on someone like me." I rolled my eyes and began walking away from him. I had swallowed enough attitude already that day. He quickly followed after me. "Hey, I'm not trying to offend you," he assured me, though his tone wasn't as convincing. "I just can't stand to see casual jokers like you walking around calling themselves Pokémon trainers. Sure, there are bug catching kids who are out having some fun, but then there's real training. Your friend back there on Route 22 said he was going to challenge the Indigo League. What about you? What are you doing?"
"I've been training," I said. "Real training. What do you know about it?"
"Are you going to take the Gym Leader Challenge? Are you going to face the League? What? I'm serious. Why are you here?" He was persistent.
"I am going to start a Pokémon Sanctuary," I reluctantly said, hoping it would be enough for him to leave me alone.
"Oh, like a Pokémon Safari?" he asked. He seemed genuinely interested which was a departure from my encounter with Wolf.
"Similar, I guess. I want to create a natural habitat for as many Pokémon I can and provide a safe place for them to live and interact with humans in a natural environment. You wouldn't catch them. You'd go there to understand them better. Maybe to study them in a safe environment, or just to understand yourself and your relationship with Pokémon better. You know?"
"My grandfather would love a place like that," he said with a snicker. "So you're what? Playing at training?"
"No. Not at all. It's important to me to understand Pokémon, so it's important for me to be a trainer. I'm traveling Kanto to catch, record and study as much as I am here to train and battle. Why do you care?" I suddenly stopped to ask him.
"I told you. I can't stand seeing trainers like you. You looked so pathetic out there against that other guy. Yeah, you won, but you looked like a chump. You gotta get serious," he announced. "If you want respect in Kanto, you gotta take your training seriously." He flashed a couple of badges he had pinned to his backpack. "You earn these and people will know you're serious. Maybe some day I'll see you up on the Indigo Plateau." He laughed as if that thought amused him, but I sensed he wasn't mocking me this time. He was genuinely enjoying a thought of us battling it out in the big league matches on the plateau.
"What do you think I should do?" I asked rhetorically.
"You need to figure out what Pokémon training means to you. Stop thinking about your Sanctuary, or whatever, for a minute. Maybe that will happen, or maybe it won't, but right now you need to figure out what kind of trainer you are and what your Pokémon mean to you." He ran his fingers through his messy, brown hair and nodded to the building across from us. "Look at that place. What a disgrace." We'd stopped just near the Viridian Pokémon Gym. "If I ran that place, it would be open all day every day, so trainers could come and train or challenge the gym. That's what it means to me. I'm ready to train, to fight, to win all day and every day. The guy who runs this place is a coward. The League should kick him out and give this gym to someone who actually cares." I could only nod in reluctant agreement. "Look, I just wanted to pull you aside and tell you if youI  are gonna face guys like that or guys like me, you better get serious about it. You're only going to get yourself or your Pokémon hurt if you don't and that really pisses me off."
"I'll think about what you said," I offered. He seemed to take that answer as the best he could get and nodded a gruff approval.
"Good. Maybe someday when you're ready we'll have a real battle. Smell ya later." He laughed at me and walked off.
I rolled my eyes behind his back. What did this kid know about me? Even still, his words stuck with me for a long time.

Rain drizzled down the leaves of Viridian Forest, methodically finding their way down to the ground where I was making my way. The dense forest was dark and gloomy even on the best of days. As a result it was full of bug Pokémon, including the newest addition to my small team. I was lucky to run into a Caterpie with my last remaining Pokéball. I was told by the Pokédex that they were quite rare that time of year. As a result, I named him Lucky. I ran into a handful of bug-catching kids who wanted to battle and throughout these few fights I could only think about what that kid in Viridian City had said to me.
Was I any different from these kids who were mostly playing at Pokémon training? Did I have what it takes to stand face to face against real dangers in the wild? Could I some day challenge the very best trainers in Kanto with confidence? In the wake of my battle with Wolf earlier that morning, and the unsettling conversation with a pushy little trainer outside Viridian Gym, it's fair to say that my trek through Viridian Forest changed me. It was where I decided exactly what kind of Pokémon trainer I was going to be, and how I would achieve my goals as a trainer and future preservationist of Pokémon.
I decided as I made my way onward to Pewter City that if I expected my Pokémon not to fail me, then I could not fail them. I decided that if I were going to build a safe place for Pokémon to live and interact with each other and with humans, I needed to build a safe space for them on my team. I needed to understand their strengths and their weaknesses. Unlike Wolf who was content to just laugh as his Pokémon fainted, laugh as he traded away a tiny fraction of his disposable credits to me, I would not accept fainting as a part of training. I made the decision that my Pokémon would never be pushed to the point of  breaking. If I ever failed them, even once, I would let them go. I would find them a better home, or release them back into their habitats to live out their days naturally. As I passed through Viridian Forest, I emerged from my own cocoon with a newfound purpose and seriousness. I had decided exactly what it meant to me to be a trainer and hopefully someday the owner of the world's first successful Pokémon Sanctuary.

Thirteen Months In The Making

The last time the Void Spinners saw paint was July of last year, and I've finally got arround to making and painting the barrels for them. I wasn't a fan of the lack of detail on the Specialist Games versions so I useds some Forge World Night Spinner barrels instead. Thanks to the close-up there's some cleanup I have to do on a few of them still, but I hope to finish them up with the Shuriken Catapults on the Falcon hulls.

Speaking of, I finished the black and started on the blue weapons. Those should finish up next week, then it's on to the engines and cockpit glass. Then a whole lot of orange...

Essen 2018 Demo Space

6 years ago, Michael and I attended Essen for the first time. I've been back a few times since (I missed out last year, and maybe one other year since 2012). Over time, TMG has grown and has striven to become a well known publisher, not just in the US, but overseas as well.

In recent Essen outings, we have teamed up and shared space with European partners, affording us a bigger presence, better demo space, and in some cases a small office to share for meetings. This year appears to be TMG's biggest Essen presence yet! This time we're partnering with Game Brewer, with whom we have several co-publications.

Check out these awesome pics of the TMG/Game Brewer space!

This panoramic pic is the demo space, with 15 tables (room for 30 demos, probably). People will be playing TMG and Game Brewer games there non-stop for the next 4 days straight. You can see the giant banners for games like Trade on the Tigris and Ghosts of the Moor (TMG original titles), Gentes (an import we did a deluxe version of), and on the far right you can see a TMG logo suspended above our sales area. On the left you can see giant posters for some of those same games, plus Chimera Station (which I worked on heavily) and other co-publications such as Gugong.

This is the TMG product area being set up, where people will be able to buy our games. I worked heavily on Pioneer Days (in the middle on the bottom 2 shelves), and on Steam Works (upper right shelf, left side, as well as the bottom right shelf, behind that big box). And of course on the right-middle shelf you can see a bunch of my card game, Eminent Domain, and expansions (Escalation, Exotica, and Oblivion).

I can also spot some of our other titles, such as Scoville, Guilds of London, Exodus Fleet, Okey DokeyThief's Market, Zooscape, Balloon Pop, Cthulhu Realms, and the Essen release, Ghosts of the Moor.

Dargon sits atop everything, standing guard :)

At Essen, some of the bigger booth areas have little office spaces, for meetings and to store things. TMG has shared an office space in the past with another company. I believe this year we have this one all to ourselves. The giant posters are for some of our games -- Ghosts of the Moor is a brand new title releasing at Essen by some of the most famous designers in Germany. Jungli-La came out earlier this year, by a well known Asian designer that we've worked with before. Both are light, small box, family friendly games.

This is one of the things that Mike and I have been working towards since we first went to Essen 6 years ago, and in a way for the last 9.5 years since we started publishing games. I started this journey 15 years ago when I first dipped my toes into game design. I am sad to miss out on Essen this year, but I hope to be able to go back soon!

The Dark Untold Story Of PUBG Sanhok Map

SANHOK, unlike other PUBG maps, is 4×4 km wide consisting of the jungles and mountains. But there is a dark story behind this jungle map. Many PUBG players have complained of seeing a ghost or spiritual activities in this horror map. The story behind this map is more terrifying.

It was the ancient time when kings ruled their kingdoms. The island of Sanhok was ruled by a cruel king. As per their traditions and rituals the first daughter of the villagers, when reached the age of 14, would be sacrificed in the name of GOD. They were killed in a cave such that their blood was allowed to drop in the cave and then their dead bodies were buried in ruins. ( In the game both the cave and ruins are present. Also one can notice the water full of blood inside the cave)

They kept doing it until one day the king had died suddenly. The reason was unknown. One of the king's man became the next king only to die the same way the earlier king had died.

The villagers believed that the ghost of the girls who were sacrificed was the reason behind the death of the kings. It was very terrifying for them.

They made dolls of the girls who were sacrificed because they hoped that the ghost would be stuck in the dolls and would not kill them. In the real game, the dolls can be found in many locations. Also, many horror sightings were seen by many players.

Some images of horror sightings are given below :

Having no king to rule, the civilians were divided into two groups. One supporting the ritual and the other one opposing the ritual. The ironic thing is that the supporting group thought that the paranormal activities are because GOD is angry with the opposing group and the opposing group thought that the paranormal activities are because of the supporting group.

The role of PUBG players on this island is either the ritual supporting or the opposing group. Which group in your opinion is correct? Answer us by leaving a comment below.

    Note :

         ▪ The name 'Sanhok' has been derived from the combination of the Thai word for 'fun' pronounced as sah-nook and the Filipino word for chicken pronounced as 'mah-nook'.
       ▪ There is no strong proof that this story for Sanhok is true but according to many players and some evidence of horror, activities increases the trueness of this story.

I

It's Just Two Spinners Sharing The Night

I finished up the turrets on the Night Spinners last night. I ended up going with a magenta for the Doomweavers, and putting the glow more towards the middle/base. Annoyingly, I painted on my gloss coat which resulted in a yellow/brown tinge getting on them. I'm not sure if it was something in the brush or what but I have to clean up a few parts (it's most noticeable on the white highlights). I'll get to that in a bit and get some grass tufts on there as well, then I have to figure out Falcon turrets.
