Working With The USO To Help Veterans Find Jobs

A recruiter and military spouse on Google's new veteran staffing team shares more about our initiatives for the military community.

Law Enforcement In Esoteric Enterprises

Security Guard
The standard rent-a-cop that might be found guarding warehouses, banks and so on. Training and experience are very varied, some are veterans of the police or military that have drifted into the career, others are pretty much sitting ducks. Equipment is typically poor.
Security Guard: 3 flesh (1 dice), 3 grit (1 dice). AC 14 (stab vest). Saves 17+. Nightstick (+1, d8 damage). Radio and flashlight.

Beat Cop
The standard officer on the street. Reasonably well trained. Reactions and equipment vary wildly depending on your location; cops in the UK have only basic weaponry and are trained to de-escalate or restrain, while American cops have sidearms and the will to use them.
Beat Cop: 3 flesh (1 dice), 6 grit (2 dice). AC 14 (stab vest). Saves 16+. Nightstick (+2, d8+1 damage) or tazer (+1, d6 damage and save or be stunned for a round) or pistol (+1, d8 damage). Strength and Wisdom 13. Handcuffs, radio.

Plain Clothes Officer
An undercover cop. Could pop up in all sorts of situations, from a plant in a criminal organisation to an unrelated officer pretending to be an environmental protestor. Smooth talking yet reserved.
Undercover Cop: 3 flesh (1 dice), 6 grit (2 dice). AC 14 (stab vest). Saves 16+. pistol (+1, d8 damage). Charisma and Wisdom 13.

Riot Cop
Heavily armoured police sent to deal with large-scale disturbances. Seasoned veterans equipped for close combat. Aggressive, well disciplined.
Riot Cop: 3 flesh (1 dice), 9grit (3 dice). AC 17 (riot armour & shield, high dexterity). Saves 15+. Club (+3, d8+1 damage) or stun baton (+3, d6+1 damage and save or be stunned for a round). Strength and Dexterity 13. Handcuffs, gas-mask, radio.

Firearms Officer
For when the police really want to shoot somebody, typically only brought out to deal with armed standoffs, raids on criminal bases, and dealing with occult criminals. Well trained and determined.
Riot Cop: 3 flesh (1 dice), 9grit (3 dice). AC 16 (riot armour). Saves 15+. Shotgun (+3, d12) or automatic rifle (+3, d10) Wisdom and Dexterity 13. Handcuffs,  radio.

Police Marksman
As with firearms officers. Employed to shoot people the police really want dead. Slow, careful snipers.
Riot Cop: 3 flesh (1 dice), 9grit (3 dice). AC 16 (riot armour). Saves 15+. Marksman's Rifle (+3, d12 or –1, d12 if not aimed already) or pistol (+3, d8) Wisdom and Dexterity 13. Handcuffs,  radio.

Men In Black Field Agent
Black suits. Dark glasses. Earpieces. Strange firearms. ID doesn't match any agency you've encountered.
An unearthly presence. Unsettling, commanding. Always composed, relentless, seems not to feel fear or pain. Civilians shy away from the instinctively. The police obey them without question.
Field Agent: 6 flesh (2 dice), 9 grit (3 dice). AC 15 (smart suit). Saves 14+. Hypertech Pistol (+4, d12). All stats are 13.
Can cast any of the following spells by brandishing their ID, 3-in-6 chance the spell is cast successfully when they do. Command, Sleep, Silence Dispel Magic, Antimagic Shell.
Their attacks count as holy & magical. Immune to mind-control.

Men In Black Paladin
Smart suits. Scarred skin glimpsed behind porcelain masks. Odd weapons. Strange sigils on their cufflinks. Voices are mere whispers.
The specialists of the Men in Black. They display agency ID that hurts to look at. Their command of police and bystanders is absolute, mundane humans submit to their will wordlessly or cower beneath their gaze.
Field Agent: 6 flesh (2 dice), 15 grit (5 dice). AC 15 (smart suit). Saves 12+. Hypertech Pistol (+4, d12). All stats are 13.
Can cast any of the following spells by brandishing their ID, 5-in-6 chance the spell is cast successfully when they do. Suggestion, Dispel Magic, Protection from Weapons, Spectral Step, Spell Immunity, Time Stop.
Their attacks count as holy & magical. Immune to mind-control.

Men In Black Abomination
Dressed in a smart black suit. Gloves over their hands. Face hidden behind a reflective black glass mask. They smell of ozone, the air around them crackles with static electricity. Silent. Unarmed.
Looking at this thing makes your eyes hurt. Civilians and the police shudder and weep where they pass. Small animals die, plants wither.
Their demeanour is blank and emotionless. They pursue their targets with a single-minded dedication. Injury doesn't seem to bother them. The powers that be only bring out such creatures when dealing with the worst disturbances.
Abomination: 9 flesh (3 dice), 12 grit (4 dice). AC 15 (smart suit). Saves 8+. Hand (+4, d8 and memory wipe). All stats are 13.
On first encountering an Abomanation, Save vs Stunning or spend d4 rounds weeping and cowering. Save again if you see what's under the mask.
Touching the Abomination's skin attacks your memory: Save vs Stunning or forget the last 5 minutes.
Their attacks count as holy & magical. Immune to mind-control.

Bodyweight--Best Exercise? (Monday Musings 60)

BJ Gaddour's Your Body is Your Barbell
Please scroll all the way down for TL/DR to save time!

Sorry for being a day late for this Monday Musings! I was spending the weekend with my parents, then worked on my friend's CV so was pinched for time!

INTRODUCTION
I purchased BJ Gaddour's Your Body is Your Barbell, as I noticed that even at the relatively inexpensive price of Planet Fitness, the fact that it's less than 1 mile from my house (0.9 miles per Google map), staff and members are friendly and fun to talk to, AND it's open 24 hours/7 days a week, I still wasn't consistently attending.

The fact that I don't have nearly as many responsibilities as most people, and still can't go to a gym that's so pleasant and convenient (technically I can walk to the gym), I now know why so many people end up not using their memberships.

Indeed, how can someone who is way more busy than me, one who has a family with children to take care of, with full-time work, make it to the gym 4 to 5 times a week? Especially if the gym doesn't have baby sitting?

Therefore, I researched into home gyms, and the key concept I got regarding home exercises is to use your body weight, instead of purchasing clunky and expensive gym equipment such as benches, squat/barbell racks and the like. I fell upon this book after reading many Amazon reviews on the subject. I wanted to find a set of exercises that you can do anywhere at anytime, with no special equipment.

I believe that a lot of users recommend Gaddour's book because it's so easy to follow, and he has a weekly program that you can follow without thinking!

There are only 8 exercises that he lists, but for each one, he lists ground zero through superhero, and by these variations, you can make things harder or easier. At any fitness level, you can be sure that you can do the easiest. If you can't do the easiest exercise variations due to pain or significant weakness, you must see your doctor to evaluate and treat.

On the flip side, for those who are able to do the hardest variations of all the exercises listed possible with perfect form, without batting an eyelash, then you should move to getting a gym membership to incorporate weights.

To get to that point, you have to be extremely dedicated, consistent and have enough time to get that strong. Surely, if you're at that level, having a gym membership will NOT go to waste and you'll be spending your money wisely.

Indeed, if you're truly that strong and/or want aesthetics, and you have the time, dedication and resources, the ideal situation is to join a gym, incorporate body weight exercises along with free weights, barbells and machines to supplement, as per all the professional body builders' recommendations. But for the average person with children, school and work, who has the time and dedication for that?

Further, all we ever really need in life is functional strength, so body weight exercises are more than adequate. We may never be Mr. and Mrs. Olympia following this book's program, but who cares?

If you can do the books' program which includes self-assisted single-arm handstand push-ups and pull-ups, single-leg squats with perfect form and controlled breathing, and so forth, you can negotiate anything that life throws at you.

The fact that you can do all of this at home with no cost, there's really no excuse. Further, he even recommends NOT wearing any shoes, so you can stand with more awareness of your weight being equally balanced on your large and small toes, and heels (tripod foot position). It's easier to shift your weight appropriately when you're barefooted rather than with shoes.

In other words, you can do these exercises the first thing you do when you wake up, since you don't need shoes.
 RECOMMENDATIONS
First, read pages 38 to 43 to make sure you have good posture.

The general gist is to do controlled movements, 4 seconds up and 4 seconds down.

Mr. Gaddour lists many types of programs that you can do that suits your need, but the easiest one to start out with (no planning needed) is on page 192. This is the Level 1 Ground Zero program x 28 days, advancing up to Level 5 Superhero. Each level is 28 days.

For the pull-up exercises, Gaddour recommends using your door, and putting something underneath for support. However, that seems like it may rip the doors off your hinge if your hinges aren't strong enough. I think you can just grip your door frame's jamb. In fact, being able to do a pull-up with just your fingers gripping this thin ledge is much harder than wrapping your fingers around a bar.

However, I can't even do a proper hang with my finger tips, so I invested in a bar like this years ago (no assembly required which is a plus), that you can place over door frame. It's $25.28 on Amazon, which is the cost of 2 months basic membership at Planet Fitness. I believe most Americans can afford, but if you can't, you'll just get stronger than the rest of us using finger tip grip to do pull-ups!

For parents with children and working full-time, don't be a perfectionist! You can squeeze in 1 minute of one of the exercises, throughout the day. There's really no need to do all 9 exercises x 3 cycles in one sitting! I'm sure you can find 9 minutes during your waking hours which will cover one cycle of all the exercises he mentions (including calf raises).

I mentioned 9 exercises (instead of his big 8), because I think calf exercises should be included in the book, which they weren't. I would add calf raises which you can easily do on stairs. I would do 20 each, alternating legs for 3 sets, if time permits. One set is perfectly fine.

Indeed, doing something is better than nothing, and if you seriously can do pull-ups x 1 minute straight even just one cycle, I would say that you have functional strength.

The book recommends doing the routine every other day, such as Mon, Wed, Fri.

Alternatively, you can do an 8-minute workout on pages 212 to 213 if you have 8 straight minutes to spare. Again, Mr. Gaddour has multiple programs to suit your needs.

As for aerobic exercise, go to page 258 for a 20 minute workout, which includes 8 full-body movements such as jumping jacks and other movements that don't seem to stress the knee. I can see people finding jumping jacks might cause some knee pain, in which case, you can skip that and double up on one of the other 7 exercises.

Because of studies that show 13 minutes of moderate cardio reaps 90% of the cardiovascular benefits of 30 to 45 minutes, you can even reduce this 20 minute workout to 13 minutes. Or take fast walks with your children up and down hills/stairs.

If you have toddlers, merely running after them will do the trick, bypassing any need for routine cardio sessions. I was out of breath running after a toddler who bolted out of my office and into stairwell, and that was just one of many incidents that you'll face as a parent.

With infants, when they're napping, you can squeeze in a cardio session.

Even if your gym membership is $10/month, it still saves $120/year. If $10/month doesn't sound like much, it can pay for 2 Twitch subscriptions of your favorite streamers!

After I finish the Level 1 Ground Zero program (4 weeks), I'll update in terms of results!

(However, since I'm fortunate enough to have a stepmill bought about 15 years ago--probably my best purchase decision--I'll be substituting that as it's easier to just go on the machine and listen to music).

TL/DR: If you're crunched for time and just starting out, I recommend reading the section on proper posture on pages 38 to 43, and then start your exercise program right away by going to page 192. Add calf raises to do on your stairs, 20 reps each leg x 3 sets (or 1 set if you don't have time), alternating legs.

You can spread out these weight lifting exercises over the course of the day. But if you have the time to do them in one session, that's ideal. Try to do these weight lifting activities three times a week such as Mon, Wed, Fri.

Alternatively, you can do the 8-minute body weight program listed on pages 212 to 213.

Go to page 258 for your cardio workouts x 13 mins minimum.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of Optical Fibres

Must See Places In Paris
Find IP You Are visitor no.
                       ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES

Bandwidth- Fibre optic cables have a much greater bandwidth than metal cables. The amount of information that can be transmitted per unit time of fibre over other transmission media is its most significant advantage.  With the high performance single mode cable used by telephone industries for long distance telecommunication, the bandwidth surpasses the needs of today's applications and gives room for growth tomorrow.   Low Power Loss - An optical fibre offers low power loss.  This allows for longer transmission distances.  In comparison to copper; in a network, the longest recommended copper distance is 100m while with fibre, it is 2000m.
Interference- Fibre optic cables are immune to electromagnetic interference.  It can also be run in electrically noisy environments without concern as electrical noise will not affect fibre.
Size - In comparison to copper, a fibre optic cable has nearly 4.5 times as much capacity as the wire cable has and a cross sectional area that is 30 times less.
Weight- Fibre optic cables are much thinner and lighter than metal wires.  They also occupy less space with cables of the same information capacity.  Lighter weight makes fibre easier to install.
Safety- Since the fibre is a dielectric, it does not present a spark hazard.
Security- Optical fibres are difficult to tap.  As they do not radiate electromagnetic energy, emissions cannot be intercepted.  As physically tapping the fibre takes great skill to do undetected, fibre is the most secure medium available for carrying sensitive data.
Flexibility - An optical fibre has greater tensile strength than copper or steel fibres of the same diameter.  It is flexible, bends easily and resists most corrosive elements that attack copper cable.
Cost - The raw materials for glass are plentiful, unlike copper.  This means glass can be made more cheaply than copper.

Cost - Cables are expensive to install but last longer than copper cables.   Transmission - transmission on optical fibre requires repeating at distance intervals.
Fragile - Fibres can be broken or have transmission loses when wrapped around curves of only a few centimetres radius.  However by encasing fibres in a plastic sheath, it is difficult to bend the cable into a small enough radius to break the fibre.
Protection - Optical fibres require more protection around the cable compared to copper.

Game Music Online: Brian Schmidt Details Composing In The SNES And Genesis Era

Want to get into blogging more regularly again. So, what pulled me out of my long hiatus?  In part, a wonderful post by Brian Schmidt about working as a game composer in the Genesis and SNES era. The fact that there are gems like this simply lying in Internet forums is pretty amazing. Brian is also remarkable for his work with reaching out from the game audio community to those who want to learn more about it. If you want to learn more about game audio, check out GameSoundCon, which he runs each year. It's a great place to learn more and this year there's an academic track as well.  More soon...

Why I Like The Osr

There's been lots of doom and gloom in my gaming circles lately, so I'm writing about why I love the OSR to cheer myself up.

My gaming has really four distinct areas I'm interested in. Namely larping, Warhammer, World of Darkness and the OSR. I only really publish stuff for one of those, though.
In the case of larping it's because a successful larp is an event. You need a good venue, a team working with you, supplies for your effects and sets and stuff. You need a budget and a supply of people willing to follow your instructions. I don't have those. So, as a larper I mostly just play and have fun, or occasionally I follow instructions and make special effects.

For Warhammer and WoD, the issue is a little different. I have, in the past, produced a whole load of content for Warhammer. Alternate army lists, campaigns, rules hacks, and so on. Even entire variants on the game. I've produced homebrew for WoD as well. None of it got published. None of it is really publishable because it's so tied to somebody else's IP.
This is what bothers me. People over at The Gardens of Hecate or Iron Sleet is producing work as skillful, as beautiful, as creative as anything in the OSR. But because the IP they're working with is so tightly tied to the company that makes Warhammer, they'll never be able to really capitalise on on that, promote themselves and carve out their own niche like you might in the OSR.
Likewise in the World of Darkness communities I see STs putting huge amounts of work and creativity and funds into their projects. (One recent larp I was at booked out an entire hotel for their post-event crew party. The larp itself was at a different venue, this was just so the crew could unwind and get sozzled somewhere nice afterwards). Again, they don't get the recognition the deserve, while people pick apart what White Wolf are doing with a fine toothed comb.

This is a problem. These projects are, ultimately, fan works. They're a rank below the stuff officially published. It restricts creativity, but more than that it restricts your ability to publish. You can't buy anybody's homebrewed hacked together Vampire the Masquerade project on DTRPG.

This, then, is what I love about the whole OSR movement. Nobody owns it. Nobody has authority over it. It's a shared communal space that exists either through a weird quirk of a licensing agreement around D&D or else in a sort of rejection of the big company's claim that they get to decide what D&D is.
Rather the OSR is made up of fans, creators, the small press, the indie outfits, and the homebrewers. The lines between all of those are vague and blurry. Anybody can make something good, and publish it, and get recognition, without needing to give too much of a shit about the rigors of intillectual property. This is, really, wonderful and rather unique if you compare it to any other tabletop gaming community.*

The OSR has fuck all barriers to entry. Most gamers are familiar with the basics of six stats, hit-dice, levels, armour class. It's a lingua franca of sorts. You can get yourself some cheap-ass layout software (I use MS Office), some public domain art, and just make whatever you think is cool. Self-publishing is super easy and if you have a blog or any sort of social-media presence, you'll find an audience who are keen to see new, weird content from new, weird creators.
Nine months ago I released a daft project about using random tables to make a fairy garden, basically out of nowhere and with no industry credentials, and it went great. I'm not special in this regard: loads of people are dropping cool stuff (so many that I'm not gonna try linking, as this post will be entirely made of links) these days. It's a great time to be into D&D.
These days, if you want to make stuff for the OSR, the single biggest obstacle is sitting down and writing it. Everything else is great.

So, yeah. Not to downplay various real issues, but I felt it worth writing out why I wanted to be part of this creative community in the first place, at least in part for my own sake.

*the only exception I can think of is the historical wargamers, who again aren't really limited to specific franchises.
