Italian Wars Mounted Crossbow

This is turning into a rather productive pandemic, even though I am working the same hours as I was before lock down I'm not distracted by Football and actual gaming and I seem to have got a bit of a painting mojo going at the moment and I'm trying to make the most of it.

These were featured as a work in progress on the video update I did on the Yarkshire Gamer YouTube channel last week and if you haven't why not have a look and subscribe (for nowt) to get the latest updates.

The unit has 12 x 28mm Perry Miniatures from the plastic box set made up to represent mounted crossbow from the Italian Wars to add to the one or two other units I have. The flag as usual is from Pete's Flags and is representative of one carried by Giovanni Medicis Black Bande.

As with my other units I have taken my cues for the clothing from the colours of the flag so you will see a lot of black and yellows in the clothing.

I just love the Perrys figures so much. They fit my painting style exactly, it's like I had a say in how they were done 😂 the faces have so much expression, a touch of paint in the right place just brings them to life.

Figures are painted in acrylics as is the horse furniture, the horses are all done in oils and I'm in the process of putting together a video run through of the process which should be up in a couple of days. Below are some photos of the individual stands.

So these can go in a box waiting for the world to get back gaming again. Next up on the paint table are the mounted element of the Kingdom of Jerusalem force.

Beach Fallacy

This month we celebrate our store's 15th anniversary. I am happy to report in year 15 I learned from failure. Failure means I'm still trying to innovate and change things up. This particular failure was one I recently realized while speaking with a friend who just sold his business. It comes down to this: The idea you can remotely manage your business with an installed manager is temporary at best. The 4-Hour Work Week may work for a turn key business, but most businesses are not even remotely turn key.

You may have a great manager, but they won't be there forever, and the process of getting a new one trained up, will be time consuming and not conducive to lying on a beach. So even if you have the skills to train them, how fast can they reasonably achieve mastery? In general, the concept of remote management for me has gone from something I might be able to do full time to something that may be possible half the time, that half determined by chaos in my business.

So I may be able to live in Mexico, for example, six months out of the year, a random six months at that, but I better have a place to stay when it all falls apart and I have to retrain staff for six months back home. The idea you can do this all remotely, living elsewhere, is a myth.

Here are the three areas that I see, that if I were a better owner or had magic powers, I would be able to solve to extend my six month theory. If you think you have skills in how to quickly train up candidates in these areas, this is where I would pay for a consultant:

  • Gross versus Net. A bad manager will spend your business into the ground with no apparent benefit. An alright manager will spend your money on long term investments that pay off later, but still leave you in the poor house right now, as they usually don't understand cash flow. A great manager will always spend cautiously and be conscious of the bottom line and the cash needs of the business.
I was not a "great manager" of cash until I had distributions from the net profit. I became incentivized to focus on net. Unless you can incentivize someone with bonuses for producing net profit, you'll always be watching your back (which you will always do regardless). Or you may train someone to be so overly cautious with your money, they take no chances at all.
  • Tight Employee Management. A good manager sets employee expectations via an accurate job description and solid training. The manager manages those expectations through the employees tenure by means of additional training and corrective action. Then they reward or penalize employee performance based on how those results are achieved.
Most managers, most people, can't do this. They simply can't without some very good training, and even then it's not within most peoples personality range. I can tell you from the corporate world that most managers are untrained and awful. Training a manager to master this process will ensure you always have good people, but good luck finding someone skilled at this for what you can afford and good luck developing the skills in yourself when you've probably only had bad managers.
  • Inventory Accuracy. Does anyone other than you really care if your POS system is only 90% accurate? Inventory accuracy results in better buying practices, higher sales, lower taxes, and happier customers. Yet, it is very difficult to have a manager who cares about this accuracy as much as you. It is very much tied to net profit. If you find someone outraged at inaccuracy, and they have skill in the other two areas, find a way to groom that employee for manager.

So those are the three areas that require an owner to be involved in a store on a near daily basis. This does not mean your store sucks if this is the case. In fact, there's no reason this should harm the value of your business if, say, you wanted to sell it. Someone with these three concerns will always need to have their hand on the wheel, but it's unlikely to be an employee for very long.

God I Love Subquark Games!

Whats going  on everyone!?

Today for the #2019gameaday challenge I grabbed one of my favorite GOTG games, Mint Tin Pirates from one of my all time favorite game publishers, Subquark Games!

Of course my lovely wife won the game but that doesn't make this game any less enjoyable.

I can honestly say that I have grown to expect to have their line of games with me wherever I go. By far my favorite games for travel and nearly a must!

As always, thank you for reading and don't forget to stop and smell the meeples! :)

What The Heck Is Going On?

So, at this point, I'm a week late for a new episode. Don't fear, a new one is coming. Probably next week. I recognize that I've skipped weeks before and haven't ever said why, except perhaps in passing. Normally, it's because I'm off performing my two weeks of annual training for the National Guard. But not this time.

It's like this. I need to get my life to a better place. Mainly with my health, but also my relationship with my wife and kids. I have high blood glucose and I need to get it under control. I've drastically altered my diet and am exercising more. That means earlier mornings, which require earlier nights. That means less time for recording and editing and everything else that goes into making the podcast.

If you're reading this, I assume you're a regular listener. For that I thank you. I owe you quite a bit. For example, I owe you more and better content. It's coming. Exactly what form that is, I don't know.

But back to my main point.

I'm exercising more, eating better, working harder on my Cub Scout commitments (I'm Cub Master for the Pack my son is in), working harder in my National Guard posting (Senior Platoon Trainer NCO for Officer Candidate School), and wanting to do more "hobby stuff." All of this takes time. Unfortunately, all of these things take a higher priority than simply banging out a podcast when it comes due.

Now, there is some cross-pollination in there. It's especially evident when it comes to my National Guard pursuits and my hobby. For example, Henry Hyde will be publishing an article I wrote as a direct result of my recent military education. Additionally, I'll be writing about my experience in planning a staff ride for the Officer Candidates. More on that later. Furthermore, I'm planning more articles for Henry.

As for the hobby stuff, I want to spend more time with my kids. Luckily, they both want to paint figures with me and play more games. Anticipate that generating more content for the podcast and maybe more blog posts here. For example, the projects I'm actively pursuing include:
- A semi-secret Seven-Years War project
- My son's 40k Orks
- A Full Thrust project using Halo ships
- A microarmor game I'm developing with my brother Chris
- Rommel in 3mm
- The Commands & Colors Epic Fantasy (not BattleLore) project (and I might have a writing partner for this one now)
- The space station project I talked about previously for sci-fi skirmish (possibly Oldhammerish)

Lots of other stuff is ruminating as well. What can I say, I'm a gaming magpie from way back. In the meantime, I'm trying to read more history, historical fiction, self-help, US Army doctrine publications and even the occasional hobby magazine!

I'm a busy guy. Part of this little pause has been taken up with some thought, soul searching, prioritizing, planning, and figuring what the hell I'm doing next. Part of that is going to take me becoming more personally disciplined in how I go about things. I've never scheduled "free time" before, but I might have to start.

We're all busy. So, I hope you can understand why I might be late with the podcast. I hope you'll forgive me. One of these days, you might even think what I produce was worth what you paid for it.

That is all.

Backtrack4

The Remote Exploit Development Team has just announced BackTrack 4 Beta. BackTrack is a Linux based LiveCD intended for security testing and we've been watching the project since the very early days. They say this new beta is both stable and usable. They've moved towards behaving like an actual distribution: it's based on Debian core, they use Ubuntu software, and they're running their own BackTrack repositories for future updates. There are a lot of new features, but the one we're most interested in is the built in Pico card support. You can use the FPGAs to generate rainbow tables and do lookups for things like WPA, GSM, and Bluetooth cracking. BackTrack ISO and VMWare images are available here.
